Restaurant Week San Diego Winter 2011

For those of you who don’t live in San Diego, they have this great promotion here twice a year called Restaurant Week San Diego. I was here last year during one of the weeks, but I can’t remember which one. Basically, the promotion is at over 150 restaurants in San Diego County where you can get a great 3 course meal (appetizer, main course, and dessert). Each restaurant follows the same format and charges either $20, $30, or $40 for the fixed price menu.

Even though none of the restaurants even come close to having menus that follow the diet I’ve been trying to keep, it’s just too good of a deal to pass up. This week we found ourselves taking advantage of Restaurant Week 3 times and I just found out that they are having Restaurant Week 2 next week. I’m sure we’ll get sucked in at least 1 or 2 more times next week.

Meal One – French Market Grille

Our first meal was at French Market Grille where I started with the scallops, followed by their rack of lamb for my main course, and finally the chocolate cake for dessert. Since I’m not used to eating red meat or dairy, the combination made me feel like crap for a couple of days afterwards. Normally eating a meal like this is a great treat and the taste makes it worth it for me, but their food was underwhelming. I give the meal 3 out of 5 stars, which is generous.

Meal Two – Bertrand at Mister A’s

Our second meal was at Bertrand at Mister A’s downtown. The restaurant is on the 12th floor of a building about one mile north of the heart of downtown San Diego. The views from this place are simply incredible. It’s really popular and required reservations with a deposit to secure a seat. My appetizer course was a half dozen oysters, followed by sea bass, and ending with their smores dessert. I give this meal 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Meal Three – Twenty / 20 Grill

Our third and final meal out was at Twenty / 20 Grill. Since I already ate like a pig twice earlier in the week, I opted out of the restaurant week menu here. We went with friends and they took advantage of the menu, but I just got a main course and split an appetizer with my wife. The food was quite good and I give this meal a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
