Phone Call From Howard Lederer

I got a phone call from Howard Lederer today asking me to vote for Harry Reid, the incumbent Democrat Senator in Nevada. Well, it wasn’t really a phone call directly from Howard, it was one of those prerecorded messages. Howard went on to say that Harry Reid is a “friend” to online poker and that I should vote for him. He pledges that Harry will fight for my right to be able to play online poker. Since I’ve been out of Nevada for the past two weeks, I’ve been a little bit out of touch with the race there. After a quick Google search and a perusal of Rasmussen Reports, it looks like Sharron Angle actually has a 4 point lead there now. While those polls aren’t 100% accurate, it looks like the Majority Leader has a lot to be worried about. Personally, I don’t like either of the candidates. I also don’t miss their hate ads or other tactics. Don’t get me wrong, the ads in California haven’t been any better, and I’m equally unimpressed with the candidates out here. I do have to give props to the Brown camp for coming up with the two best political ads I’ve seen in a long time though. Anyway, I’m kind of getting off topic of the phone call, which I’ve been digesting for the past few hours. I just can’t imagine that someone cares about online poker enough to sway their decision on who to vote for based solely on that. I would think the general public has bigger issues to worry about than online poker. Things like education,...

Hike behind the house

I posted about this a few days ago, but the weather in San Diego has been kind of gloomy, rainy, grey – anything but typical for here. Well, two days ago the weather finally started to break for the better and today was one of those perfect San Diego days. I’d guess the temperature was between 75 and 80, not a single cloud in the perfect blue sky, and a nice breeze off the beach. Between being sick and the gloomy weather we’ve been cooped up in the house the past week or so. Normally when I’m out here I take the opportunity (two or three times a day) to walk the property with the dog and enjoy just being outside. I also like to take a walk up the hill behind our house. There is a private road right behind us that leads to just 3 houses, all with amazing views. Today was one of those days where I was outside as much as I could be. Around 2pm I decided it was time to take a break and walk up the road behind our house. Of course the doggy came along; it’s one of his favorite things to “take a walk”. The private road is about one mile long and has several offshoots that lead up the mountain. I normally don’t take those because I’m worried about snakes and other critters being up there, but I just could resist today. It took about 30 minutes to hike up to the top of the mountain and I was exhausted by time I got there. However, the views at...

The Social Network & AMEX

So, I went to see The Social Network tonight, or as I call it, the Facebook movie. I didn’t really know much about it going in. I don’t see that many movies anymore, so I don’t normally see many previews. I actually like it that way so I can be more surprised as I watch them. I thought the movie was good for the most part. The acting was above average and the story was very interesting. As with anything in Hollywood, I wonder how much of the movie was 100% factual, how much was embellished, and what was actually left out. It did leave my stomach kind of in knots by the end though. As someone who is in the middle of a lawsuit personally right now, the thought of lawyers, court rooms, depositions, lawsuits, or anything of the like is really upsetting to me. The actors did a good job of showing their pain and frustration and I could really relate to that. The whole legal process is is just brutal. When the movie was over I checked my email and had what has become a pretty routine email and voice mail from American Express. They normally call me, email, or simply lock my card about once a month with some random security concern. It’s really a pain in the butt honestly. However, this time it was really an issue. It looks like someone, somehow, got a hold of my credit card number and went on a joyride though Maryland with it. I don’t really understand it as the guy said they actually presented the card, but...

How I purchased my first website for Terran Marketing

Earlier this week I purchased the first website for Terran Marketing, the new company I created just a couple of weeks ago. I had been searching for something to buy in my spare time for quite a while and it’s not an easy process. Let me lay out the process I used to do this. 1. There were certain things I was willing to compromise with, but one thing I was adamant about was getting a .com name. I’m not a big fan of .net, .org, .info, or anything like that. Those names don’t do nearly as well with google and it always leaves the door open for someone else to purchase the .com later and compete with you. 2. I wanted a keyword domain that gets a lot of search traffic. My minimum criteria was 100,000 local searches per month. Keyword domains have unbelievable value in terms of SEO. I estimate you need 20% – 25% of the links of a non keyword domain to achieve the same results. I also feel like once you get to #1 in the SERPs for a keyword domain you are virtually locked in forever. 3. I needed to find something that matched my criteria #1 and #2 above that also is in an industry that has affiliate programs. To affiliate program areas include dating, credit cards, mortgages, credit ratings, working from home, online schools, web hosting, etc. It doesn’t make sense to me buying a domain that gets a lot of traffic, but has no way to make money with it. 4. I wanted to work in an industry that I...

High Stakes Poker Season 7

I found out today that we have been granted access to the filming of High Stakes Poker Season 7 in Las Vegas from November 18th – 20th. I’m pretty excited about this for several reasons. First and foremost, I think it will be great content for one of our sites, Poker News Daily. Videos and articles, with not only the players, but the entire filming process of HSP will get a lot of attention. They are the types of things people would be really interested in and link to which is great for SEO. I’m also interested in this on a personal level too though. It’s not because I want to meet the players on HSP, but rather see the process of them filming it. I’ve met just about every player that plays on HSP over the past 6 years. Being in the online poker affiliate industry and meeting players goes hand in hand. What I haven’t done is witness a taping of a TV show quite like this. It’s a little known fact that I used to own a significant portion of the Canadian Poker Tour, so I’ve been to tapings of events like the CPT or even WPT. However, those aren’t shows that I really have a personal interest in. I mean, I couldn’t even tell you the last time I watched an episode of the WPT. However, I’m kind of like my dog is with his tennis ball when a new episode of HSP comes out. I think it will be a lot of fun being at the tapings next month and I will report back...
